Federal Coffee Shop has been in that location all along. In addition to the fish ball noodles, there is also a rice stall selling chicken and barbeque/roasted meat, and "Charp Fann" (Chinese Nasi Campur). Towards the rear of the shop, an Indian man sells Nasi Kandar, and there use to be a "Wantan Meen" stall too. The coffee shops in that vicinity offer a good mix of hawker food. Across from Federal is Swiss Hotel cum Coffee Shop. The noteworthy items available in this kopitiam include "Cantonese Chow Funn", "Char Kuay Teow" and Satay. However, I am not sure if Swiss is still around today. My other favorite coffee shop in that neck of the woods was Chow San which is directly opposite Lido Cinema. The "Sar Hor Funn" is excellant and so are the "Wantan Meen", Rojak and Lobak. Like so many old-time favorites, Chow San has fallen along the way in the march towards progress. The shop was converted into yet another fast food restaurant which is more popular with the younger crowd. For those of us who use to work in that part of the town, the variety of food available at lunch time was simply mind-boggling to say the least. Did the names of the other two coffee shops ring a bell or sound familiar? Best wishes, Ken. P/S: Teresa sends her regards! |
