Ipoh is my home town. It is a place where tin built. A town of grace and wealth. I remembered how this town used to be a bustling place. The tin was one of the main attraction and migrants came to find the fortune. Today the left behind their legacy. If you go to old town you can find Panglima street. It is where the rich towkays of old house their mistresses. The people gamble and smoke opium there. At motley of people full of activities. The children squatted in the pavement listening attentively and rapt attention to the story teller. They pay these story tellers 5 cents each and the duration for entertainment is only one burn joss-stick. The china men will peddle their wares with a long stick over their shoulders and two large baskets on both ends. The Indians will drive a bullock carts in town selling baja. You can see the mata-mata (policeman) of old walking around town. They are friendly and a help to mother with naughty children. Another interesting place is the clock tower build during the British colonial time. You can see pictures of different professional painted round the clock. Think some seniors are aware the Ipoh is once a rich town and it had the first automobiles driven round town. That is why the number plates of Perak started with "A". Ipoh is a valley and you can see beautiful limestone caves all round. The hills are scenic. You can see the kampong folks easy loving and peaceful. The city folks entertainment are the coffee shops, the theatres, hawker stalls. We were surrounded with jungles once upon a time and certain times cicadas will come to town. The lovely sound they made. We either tie one of their legs and play with them or frighten the daylight of some of our friends. Ipoh of old have a lot of happy memories. Hope we can share some to our younger children. Nowadays children miss out in the simple enjoyment of life in days gone by.

Hi Bart, I refer to your comments which I quote below: "I thought there was SUN theater by the Kinta River at the beginning of the bridge as you come from SMI along Brewster Rd towards the fire-station (after the bridge)?" You are absolutely correct, there was this SUN Cinema in old town in the location where you mentioned (beginning of the bridge from the old town side towards the fire station); at that time it was the cheapest cinema in Ipoh, all the other cinemas in New Town charged 0.65 cents for the cheaper seats but Sun Cinema charged 0.40 cents for the cheaper & the next grade was only 0.65! I think the place is now a car park of some kind. I watched so many movies at this place!

Left Malaysia for Australia in February 1972 - I was doing Form 5 at CHIJ then. Planning a visit back to Ipoh in Feb 2008. I believe that most of my classmates hithered off to the UK & may well have stayed there. Have not kept in touch. Road names are all different - I am still a dinosaur talking in terms of Brewster Rd, Hugh Low St, Anderson Rd! While the landscape may have changed, I am hoping that I will still be able to find my way around. I am hoping to find all the old haunts for food. While Adelaide can boast some good Malaysian hawker style food, I am hankering for a good mee rebus, satay, popiah & a wealth of other delicacies unique to Ipoh!! The photos are great but they need a link to say what they are.

educated in Ipoh, anglo chinese school jalan lahat. Stayed in pasir puteh area. pasir pinji used to be a notorious area but you virtually get everything cheaper than anywhere else. Used to cycle from pasir puteh (near shatin park to school at Jln. lahat. when I was younger I used to stay at Jln lahat just next to the railwayline and the railway gate. Fasinating to stay at such place, noisy, polluted but fun to watch the train passed by.

I was born and bred in Ipoh and went to school in Marion Convent Ipoh and then Main Convent Ipoh for secondary education. I left the country in 1989 and Have been living in England since then. I am married to Peter who was born and bred in England. His father is Italian and his mother is English and they have recently migrated to Australia. My husband and I are travelling to Ipoh soon and we will be staying in the Syuen Hotel. The last time we were there, we stayed at the Heritage Hotel. We had a good time. Peter loves the sun and he is really looking forward to the food.

Howdy y'all !!! Greetings from an ex-resident of Ipoh and ex-CHIJ who is now residing in Dallas, TX. Come April 2006 is a long overdue visit for me. Just like any Malaysia food deprived person, I swear that I will visit every food stall in Ipoh with full speed. The last time that I was home (ummm about 10 years ago), I had a case of 'diarrhea' but that did not stop me from eating ... LOL. This time, I will be fully prepared with a bagful of Alka Seltzer & Tums and ample supply of Cutter Skin-tastic (mosquiteo repellant); like my 7th coy girl guides motto - BE PREPARED. The only regret I have is that I did not keep in touch with a lot of friends that I grew up with ... who knows, I might bump into some of my friends around the hawker centers.

I, a former resident of Malaysia, am now residing in Toronto, Canada for 30 years. I enjoy looking at these pictures but cannot identify what building it is. If possible, please add some description or a short note to illustrate what it is at the bottom of each picture. Thank you.

Greetings from Chicago to all current and former Ipoh residents! I migrated to the States in 1984 and was back in Ipoh for a brief vacation last month. It was trip down memory lane indeed. Needless to say, I had a great time meeting with friends and relatives. Most of all, I went all out for Ipoh's famous food with a vengeance and believe me, they taste better than ever! With feeling of nostalgia still fresh in my mind, I was pleasantly surprised to stumble onto this site. The neat photos and lively discussions are a joy to behold. It provided me with a terrific follow-up to those cherished moments I have experienced during my recent stay in the city. I am sure I will visit this gem of a site regularly to touch base with everthing that is happening in my hometown. Being born and bred in Ipoh, this lovely city will always have a special place in my heart. Thanks for the memories and please keep up the good work! With warmest regards, Ken Chan

I am a man from Oslo , Norway who visited Ipoh end of July as a tourist and stayed there one weekend . Ipoh was a dream city for me. Very alike Norwegian capital Oslo due to those beautiful Limestone mountains surrounding the city . Such a tranquil atmosphere , soothing climate , marvelous food , nice, extremely friendly and cultured people really amused me like anything . After I saw Kuala Lumpur and Penang , Ipoh was totally a different world for me ! It is still rather relax and laid back atmosphere , no stress and all those nice colonial buildings you have over there it is so strange that this city did not try to capitalize abroad for European tourist ! It will definitely be liked by Scandinavians . Of course some retouching of those lovely building as well as your railway station would be very helpfull . Why your city council as well as Malaysian government is not investing some more money in renovation of the city i really didnot understand that ! I want to come back to Ipoh as soon as I can for a longer duration !!!! Thanks to Ipoh residents who were so different in Malaysia !

I just want to let you know of the awesome website. It sure bring back so much memories. I left Ipoh in 1979 for Canada. Graduated from the Main Convent in 1977. I lived at 154 Brewster Road called Sik Far Shoe Store. My father mainly manufactured shoes and boots for the jockeys. Anyone knows what become of this store? Love to hear from you

Abbe<abbe25@lycos.com>

I think I agree with you that New Town is much better than the Old Town. Well, if you're asking about cinemas... Cathay, Lido, Ruby, Rex, Odeon etc... they don't exist as cinema anymore but rather to showrooms, shopping outlets, restaurant and so on.. There was only one cinema in Old Town then, it's Sun Cinema but now its ground zero!

I grew up in Ipoh and although I'm now living in Penang, I make it a point to visit Ipoh as often as I can. I have such fond memories of my childhood and school days in Ipoh. The streets were much safer back then and I could cycle from my house in Sarmukh Road all the way to SMI for hockey games with my school mates from Main Convent. I wonder if it is still safe for young teenage girls to cycle anywhere now on their own? A few years ago I visited my old school again. It was great to see the still familiar classrooms, corridors, canteen, hall, badminton courts etc. The happy memories just came flooding back. I also used to go to Ave Maria Convent for swimming lessons because there was no swimming pool in my own school. Do Main Convent girls still go to Ave Maria for swimming lessons? It's great being able to share my memories of Ipoh here.

kayes<kayes@pc.jaring.my>

Which side of town is "better"? New or Old Town? I don't recall a single cinema in Old Town and so, entertainment wise, New Town must have been better with all the cinemas ..... Cathay, Lido, Ruby, Rex etc.
