Description: Strange it may seem but Ipoh is one of the very first places in this country to be associated with the Mac. There is a British magazine called MacFORMAT and Ariff Bookstore in Canning was the very first agent of this magazine in Malaysia. I used to buy MacFORMAT from Ariff way back in 1986 and he told me he is the agent in this country for the magazine. He will be sent the magazines from UK and he distributes them to other booksellers throughout Peninsular Malaysia. I still read MacFORMAT but only the electronic version.

Taiping Insurance

Description: Can anyone remember Taiping Insurance? It used to be very active in Ipoh (and Perak) in the late 60s and 70s. The Perak operations were run by Liew Chee Tat. They issued a lot of motor vehicle policies and therefore were involved with many accident claims in court. They have a good reputation of settling claims quickly and fairly. Anyone knows what has happened to this company? Their license to operate an insurance company must have been bought up by another company. Anyone knows?

my belated Xmas present

Description: I wanted to buy myself a Christmas present but things were so busy and we had so many visitors etc etc. So last Sunday I decided to shop online and ordered a Thunderbolt Display, a 13 inch MacBook Air and a Mac Mini from the Apple Online Store in Singapore. Total cost was RM10,796. I ordered the items on 12 February and they were delivered by DHL at lunchtime on 15 February. Not bad for a quick delivery. As you may know, Thunderbolt is the latest technology adopted by Apple to provide for lightning speed transfer of data :)

Description: I took this pic a couple of years back. This must be one of the biggest modern bungalows in Ipoh but what particularly struck me is the huge balcony in front of the house. At first I thought the balcony was actually a swimming pool but it does not appear so from the outside. Anyone knows?

Description: In the 60s, 70s and 80s, City Motors were renowned for promoting the famous Italian marque, Alfa Romeo. Then the franchise was taken away from them and Alfa lost its glory in this country. In this pic, we no longer see an Alfa ..... only Mazda and a Smart :)

Description: Will we continue to see photos like this in the future? More and more rubber estates are turned into oil palm estates because palm oil fetches a higher price. This pic was taken in the old Kemuning Estate in Sungei Siput. In the 70s and 80s I have driven through many rubber estates in the country when I was participating in motor rallies. Newcomers to rallying were always advised that "rubber trees do not bounce". :)

KLCC - Mandarin Oriental Hotel

Description: It was a very enjoyable stay at the Mandarin Oriental which provided excellent service and the staff certainly showed they like their guests, whether you are a grumpy senior citizen or an unruly baby :) Pic shows how close the hotel is to the KLCC Suria Shopping centre and to the KLCC Park ..... an (long) arm's length away to both.

Description: Stayed here before in 1971/72. Together with two others, we rented the corner flat on the 2nd floor. It is very close to town and right next to the "fountain roundabout" where major roads like Hugh Low Street, Brewster Road, Gopeng Road and Tambun Road converge. During those days, the fountain always worked and it was a pleasant sight.

Description: This photo gives us the opportunity to admire the rear view of Ipoh's heritage buildings. It is not easy to get a shot like this. This photo was made possible because the front row of houses were demolished. I can see that one house still has the bucket system toilet :)

Description: Some of you would have read reports that the car manufacturing company, Saab, has just been sold to two Chinese companies. Saab started off as a Swedish company in the mid 1940s and in addition to cars, the company also manufactured jet fighters for the Swedish air force. The earlier Saabs were as tough as tanks as they were made from very good Swedish steel. I had a Saab 99 EMS which I bought new in 1977 for the sole purpose of rallying. Pic above shows my Saab crossing the finish line in a rally which ended in Genting Highlands. Despite a head-on collision with a Ford Mexico in an oil palm estate, I still managed to finish the rally. The Ford retired after the collision. That shows how tough the Saab was. The later Saabs were not quite as tough, especially those made after 1989 when General Motors became the owners. Saabs were no longer viewed by the buying public as "tough cars" and their design also became nondescript. The earlier Saabs looked liked rockets or jet planes but the later models had no identity about them. I therefore sincerely hope that the new Chinese owners will rename Saab to HumSaab. The new name HumSaab will connote both toughness and sexiness. "Hum" will suggest it is as tough as the Hummers used extensively by the US Army and all Cantonese speaking Chinese will know what HumSaab means :)

Description: hi all, the new EPL season starts today and as a Manchester United fan, I am looking forward to see my team win the championship again. Of course I cannot say for certain that MU will be champions one more time but the excitement and joy is to cheer them on. They may play well or they may do badly but as a fan, I have hopes in every player and great faith in Alex Ferguson who is one of the greatest football managers. Every football club in the world has its own fans, otherwise football matches will not be able to generate any income at all. With no gate receipts and worldwide TV audience, players cannot be paid and football will grind to a halt. So whether a team is the best in the world or the world's worst, there are fans cheering them on. Even the bottom club in last year's championships has thousands of fans supporting them. I am starting this thread for the MU fans on this forum where they can continue to cheer their team without any fear of flaming or other form of reprisal. If you are not a MU fan, please start you own website elsewhere and cheer your team to success. DO NOT POST ON THIS THREAD, STAY AWAY! :) Any infringement will cause the person to be banned from all my websites. Well, though it is not counted, we won the Community Shield last week. Wow, from 0-2 down at halftime and won 3-2 at FT is terrific!
