Pic below taken in 2008 shows that the old Federal Hotel is now the Kavvy Hotel. The entire building is still there and very much the same as it was in 1959. Anyone knows the room rate then?

I used to presume this Federal Hotel belongs to the same management as the Federal in Bukit Bintang. But it's not even though the embossed hotel name in Chinese characters which was engraved on the wall looks exactly the same (the type face too) as the Chinese name for the Federal Hotel, Bukit Bintang.

I remember the old Federal Hotel that was run by the Chong family and one of the younger siblings was my classmate. After finishing school, me and my group of young musicians stayed there and provided the music for X'mas Eve. Tanah Rata was very cool back then unlike now.

Hi Blue grass,
School holidays are just round the corner so I might try to make a trip up to Camerons probably for a day trip. I'm hoping to see the different colours at the Ladang Teh if I'm lucky.

Hi Kayes,
The above pic was taken back in the early 60s and we were standing in front of the main entrance to the hotel restaurant. The guy (second from right) is Chong Chun Nee the younger brother of William Chong, the then owner of Federal Hotel, Tanah Rata. We were young kids then and we were there on X'mas day. I'm still looking for the pics of the Nissan huts.

Hi Joe
Having the time of your life! What lovely memories this pic must conjure. Do you know what has happened to the Chong family as I think the hotel might have changed hands.

Here's wishing you a pleasant time in Cameron Highlands. Do let us know the colour of the tea bushes if you make it to Boh Tea Estate. [Make sure the tea estate is not packed with cars before venturing in!]

Hi Blue grass,
I have lost touch with the Chongs as it was decades ago but I hope that someday, I'll get some news of where they are.
I'm heading back to Ipoh tomorrow for a few days and I hope to make a trip up to Camerons. Hopefully, there won't be a jam since its the school holidays. I also need to attend a funeral of a good friend, Michael Yeh, who had a fatal accident in the Behrang area. The late Michael is the brother of Yap Lin Sen and everyone in Ipoh knows him so I guess he will have a grand sendoff.
I also need to catch up with some of the food places in Ipoh esp. some that you mentioned in your post. Yum!!!!

hi Joe, I saw the obituary in yesterday's Star newspaper. I have never met Michael Yeh but I have met Yap Lin Sen several times when he was the Executive Director of Ipoh Garden. Yap Lin Sen is a real gentleman and so Michael must have been like him. It was only the other day that someone was telling me Michael has a beautiful classic Jaguar XJS. Does he have other classic/vintage cars?

Hi Joe
Sorry to hear you have lost a good friend, Michale Yeh in an accident. Ipoh is in shock as many people have heard of him, even if they don't know him personally. I have only met him briefly on a few occasions but I believe he had a wide circle of friends.

Hi Kayes and Blue grass,
Yes I think the late Michael has that Jag and a few other cars. Things have to be sorted out regarding his will and stuff. I'll enquire about it and let you know.
We had a jam session at Denis cafe last night in tribute to the late Michael. Met up with some old friends and classmates last night.
BTW I just discovered that the NamChau curry mee has opened up a branch inIpoh Garden South so no need to go to Leech Street to have it. Burger King also has an outlet just opposite Jaya Jusco. Deffinitely better thatn McDonalds.

The old Federal Hotel is no more. In its place is the new Planters Hotel and room rates are RM180 upwards.

Love the Planters Hotel signage. Have seen few Planters Inn. Wonder if Planters Hotel and Planters Inn belong to the same group.
