Thanks for this pic of St Michael's Church, Kayes. I haven't entered this church for nearly 35 years but can still visualise its insides. Many Friday mornings had been spent here during my schooldays.

My daughter spent her whole school life at the Convent Light Street, Penang and she tells me she can remember everything about the school chapel and all the prayers she said.

Like your daughter, I, too, spent my entire school life at one school, ie Ipoh Main Convent. And St Michael's Church was the church for Main Convent's students. Would you believe I can still remember the full version of our school anthem (I posted it on another thread in this forum a couple of years ago), all the prayers and the hymns we sang at this church? Silly old me. Smile

The church has gone through many renovations throughout, but this was the most extensive. It was completed around mid 2009. It played significant roles at different points of my life. I remember the parish house on the left before the present hall was built. There is a road that you can use to access to Hugh Low Street. On this road, there was an old house that was a replenishing point for those three-wheeled bread vendors. There was also a bungalow at the end of the road on your left. Whose was it? It had a vast plot of land, if my memory serves me right.

Hi, Adr1970.
Thanks for your informative update on what's happened to St Michael's Church, a site whose surroundings still hold much nostalgia for me. The following two threads may help with your questions:

Adr1970,
Regarding your comment about the 'replenishing point' for the bread vendors, there's some mention of it on this thread (scroll past halfway down the long exchanges of posts):

Thanks Phoebe,
In the 70s my family attended mass at St Michael's every Sunday morning. We used to travel by the town bus. We got down at the bus stop just before Main Convent but after the Catholic Center Building
(building is still there but looks deserted. the surrounding area is being used as a car park).
After mass, we walked along Church Lane to Hugh Low Street to another bus stop across the road (facing that St George Girls School). No perverts that time. :-)
