It is the month of the Hungry Ghosts again and huge joss sticks and many roadside stages can be seen all over Penang. How is the situation in Ipoh? Be careful, get home before the witching hour Smile

Can anyone remember one of the very first games made for the computer called "Taipan"? I used to play it in 1980s on my Apple IIE. During certain stages of the game, you might be chased by an armada of Chinese Junks and the computer screams "BIG JOSS"! During the Hungry Ghosts month, it is indeed Big Joss all over the island.

At home, we follow the South China's calendar and Kwai Chit (Ghost Festival) is on Chat Yit Sub Sei - 14th of 7th lunar month. For 2011 it is on 13.8.2011. During the day(14th of 7th lunar month), prayers are offered and food is placed on ancestral alter - Bai Choh Seen. Bai(Pray) Choh Seen(ancestors). Towards the evening(14th of 7th lunar month), usually it's after 5pm and before 6.30pm, prayers are offered and food are placed on the roadside. Praying by the roadside is called Bai Kai Yi - Bai(Pray) Kai(Street) Yi(Beggers or homeless). Whenever elders are praying by the roadside or Bai Kai Yi, children are not allowed to be around and everyone is not supposed to go out late at night on Chat Yit Sub Sei. In fact, it's not advisable to go out at night during the 7th lunar month.

Since Hungry Ghost Festival is for the entire 7th lunar month, prayers and burning of joss sticks are done throughout this month in all temples.

My first computer was a hand me down Mac SE30. SE30 came with a bag and floppy disks were used. Many assignments are done using that SE30. Still remember carrying that SE30 (in its bag) all over the place. Didn't complain about the weight but instead felt very proud that a computer can be carried to anywhere we wanted. Come to think of it, when compared with today's iPad2 - carrying that SE30 was like carrying a huge rock. Smile
