Hi Kayes. During one of our holidays up Cameron Highland, we suddenly felt like eating strawberries and cream quite late, after dinner. We drove to Tanah Rata town but none were available. As a last resort we tried Smoke House but the staff at reception informed us that the kitchen had closed. We were standing around looking rather dejected when a woman came to find out what the commotion was all about. She was the owner and on hearing of our desire for strawberries and cream, told her staff to serve us. She was most accommodating and sat down for a coffee with us. After dessert we were shown all the unoccupied rooms in the hotel. What a gracious lady, displaying hospitality at its best.

Hi Blue Grass,

Wonder if it is okay to view the hotel rooms before checking in. That was what my friends did when they were in Penang. They needed a room badly as they were stranded due to some technical problems. They managed to get a room (through phone) in a hotel at Jalan Macalister with the alphabet "A". But when they reached the hotel; they were hesistant. Instead of checking in, they asked to view the room. They were refused at first but my friends insisted. In the end, they drove back to KL immediately (at 1a.m.) without staying at that hotel.

Blue Grass, I missed your earlier post. That lady must have been Nancy Lee, the sister of the late Peter Lee, who bought Smoke House from the late Stanley Foster.

Hi Orange
Most hotels have obliged when I request to see their rooms, even Cameron Highlands Resort owned by YTL. Perhaps your friends arrived at some ungodly hour and looking worse for wear!!

I've not been up Cameron Highlands for some time, Kayes. But when I do make a trip, I would like to pay the hospitable MS Lee a visit and remind her of a most pleasant evening when she served us strawberries and cream almost at eleven at night!

Hi Blue Grass,

That hotel at Jalan Macalister, Penang has since changed name. The new name is Red Rock Hotel and it looks new when we passed by that way some time back.

Strawberries with cream or melted chocolate, yum yum!!

Hi Kayes

Did you meet the most hospitable Ms Nancy Lee? I wonder if she is still the owner of Smoke House.

hello Blue Grass, Nancy Lee was not there during our stay but we were served by very attentive staff. It would have been nice to meet her because I knew her late husband, Peter Lee, when he was one of the top brass at Cold Storage. I also wonder whether there has been any ownership change in the hotel.
