SMI is celebrating its Centennial year with a big dinner on 29th September 2012 and it will be held on school premises - the school field. I was told that a wooden platform will be built over the entire field to protect the grass, huge canopies and a stage. Heard that all 200 tables have been sold - now is that good marketing or what?! Mind you, it is still only February!

SMI celebrated its centennial on 29 Sept. I was there. I flew in to KL on the Friday night and went up to Ipoh on Sat late afternoon to attend the centennial dinner. It was a family affair for us as my dad, uncle, brother and cousins attended too. I met up with my year's class mates and we made up of 6 tables. Overall it was a boisterous event. Syabas to the organisers.
Our yr school mates anticipate more to attend next yr's old boys dinner as we will be celebrating 30 yrs since we left school! Now you know my age!

Hi hokin,
Did Dato' Brother Vincent attend this celebration? He was the acting principal for Sekolah Menengah Stella Maris, KL for a brief stint - after Brother Casimir passed away in 1998. Dato' Brother Vincent loves Ipoh more!

Bro Vincent was there. He is too attached to SMI. He has been at SMI for decades.

Thanks, hokin!
When Brother Vincent was the acting Principal of Stella Maris after Brother Casimir passed away, students and parents were hoping that he would take up the post of Principal. When Brother Vincent decided to go back to SMI, Brother Cassian Pappu, who resigned earlier due to ill health, came back to Stella Maris to take over the post of Principal.
Students of Stella Maris were overjoyed when they got to meet up with Brother Vincent again when they attended a leadership camp at SMI.

The newspapers reported today that Brother Charles has passed away. He was the Principal of SXI in Penang for many years and I got to know him because both my sons spent their entire school lives in SXI, from Primary to Secondary. In 1994 or 1995, when he was the Principal of SGI in Taiping I saw him walking in the Lake Garden and I stopped my car to have a chat with him. I also knew the late Brother Casimir. When he was Principal of SXI in Penang he used to give English Literature lessons to a few students of the Convent Light Street and my daughter attended all his lessons.

Attended Brother Casimir's funeral at St. John's Cathedral, KL. Brother Casimir's sister and niece who flew from Ireland were also present.

Hi Orange and Hokin
Brother Vincent was surrounded by former students and friends throughout the evening. He still looks in good health thankfully and I was able to take a pic of him, although only of his profile. But Michaelians would recognise him anywhere. I will send pic to Kayes so that you can have a look Orange.

Hi Blue Grass,
Happy to know that Brother Vincent is in good health. It's been 15 years since I saw him last.

Brother Vincent has not really aged, Orange. Gone a little thinner perhaps but still carries himself well. It was good to see him so happy, smiling and laughing. He had hundreds of souvenirs to give out and I do hope he had time to enjoy the dinner. I'll send the pic of Brother Vincent to Kayes and you can then tell me if he is still recognisable Orange.

Since I was a young girl, I've always imagined these Brothers in long white robes so it came as a shock to me when I once saw Bro. Casimir dressed in long-sleeved shirt and pants. He used to drive a Proton Saga when running errands. Even that seemed odd to me.

Hi Orange
I've sent the pic of Bro Vincent to Kayes. Have a look and you can see that he is in his element, surrounded by past and present pupils who are still very fond of him.
Odd to see these Christian brothers drive? You should have seen Bro Vincent, wearing braces, riding a bicycle!!

Hi Blue Grass,
Just as hokin said Brother Vincent is too attached to SMI and his love for cycling made him turn down the offer to head Stella Maris because it would have been too difficult to cycle along the busy roads of KL.

Going back to school .....
Brother Vincent seems to have lost weight. The thinning of hair is getting more obvious. Happy to see he looks well. Thanks Blue Grass for the pic. Appreciate it very much!

Brother Vincent was stopped from cycling when it was thought too dangerous and a Michaelian or Michaelians bought him a car. And when he got into some scraps with the car, many thought it safer that Brother Vincent should instead be driven around!

During Stella Maris's school orientation, Brother Casimir said: "The food at the canteen is halal and there is a surau in the school for Muslim students to pray." There was an University trained Ustazah to teach agama even though the number of Muslim students at that time was less than 3%.
The Stella Maris canteen uncle who used to operate a canteen at St. John's Institution serves the best Curry Laksa and 'Choy Fun'. Miss the food!!
