Message from Hieu.

"Hi, my name is Hieu Dovan. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer from the U.S.A. serving in Ipoh 1970-1972. I taught Math and Science at Sekolah Kebangsaan Connelly. I am planning to visit Ipoh in Feb 2009. I am interested in the group's recommendations as to where (restaurants or stalls) I should eat some of my favorite Ipoh foods: Nasi Ayam, Char Siew Fun, Quan Lo Mee (Mee Quan Lo), Goat Curry, Nasi Lemak, Keoy Teow, and Chi Chong Fun. I am also hoping to travel (round trip) from Ipoh to South India (Madras/Chennai) while in Malaysia. I have heard that it's cheaper to buy this ticket in Malaysia than to buy it here in the U.S. due to the regional airlines such as Asiana. Is this true? If it is, please give me a travel agent's name and email so that I can contact him/her from the U.S. prior to my leaving for Ipoh. Thank you in advance for any information that you can provide regarding the foods and travel. I'm looking forward to visiting and eating in Ipoh again".

For your travel requirements you can use Khong Bros. My Ipoh office used them for many years and I never heard of complaints. Their address is:-

KHONG BROTHERS TOURS & TRAVEL SDN BHD
21 JALAN ALI PITCHAY
30250 IPOH
TEL: 05-2531000/2547805
FAX: 2532075

( I don't have their email. If you make a Google search, you might find it).

For certain sectors it is indeed cheaper to buy your ticket from here. I know for certain if you fly from here to Thailand and Indonesia. I am not sure about India.

Hello Hieu,
There has been many postings on Ipohtalk as to the places to look for your favourite food. However if you're a fan of Ipoh's coffee, the restaurant shown on the above pic. serves very good Ipoh White coffee. As for goat/mutton curry, you will find an Indian restaurant called Krishna Bhawan on the left of the above pic. which serves real good mutton curry and lots more. For the other things you mentioned, head down the road on the right of the above pic. to a shop called Kong Heng. You will find all the varieties of food you like. Hope you will have an enjoyable stay here in Ipoh.

Thanks Kayes and Retired Falcon for the info. I'll be sure to check out the archives regarding the food recommendations. Right now we are deciding between Feb (cooler in Chennai) and June (durian season in Malaysia). BTW, I've googled the Khong Bros and could not find their email address. However, I do have skype phone and will call them directly. Thanks again.
