This is a beautiful Gerbera or African Daisy. The flowers come in many colours with single or multiple rows of petals in various shapes.

Hi blue grass,
The Gerbera is also widely grown as a decorative ornamental plant in the Midwest during the warm summer months. It has great commercial potential as cut flowers and is the 5th most popular variety that is used by florists world-wide, surpassed only by rose, carnation, chrysanthemum and tulips in that order.

Hi Ken
They are lovely flowers aren't they? Our florists here also like to use them in flower baskets and other floral arrangements but because of the Berbera's soft stems, the florists have to shore them up with thin wires.
Did you try growing them in your garden? I did and was quite successful till the snails got at them.

Hi blue grass,
I tried growing Gerbera one summer and it bloomed beautifully but like your case, the slugs (they are exactly like snails except without the shell) eventually defaced them badly. Indeed these are tender and vulnerable perennials and their colorful flowers attract butterflies and birds. However, the plants do emit a certain smell that the deer population dislike and in that sense, it is resistant to deer. There is an explosion of deer population in many suburbs and these four-legged pests either chew up or trample the vegetation in many yards and gardens.
