Or was Winner Hotel formerly at this building? The two buildings shown in the two pics on this thread are opposite each other on the same side of the road i.e. Jalan Ali Pitchay.

The Hotel Gold Wanwa is the former Winner Hotel. Back in the 60s, they used to have Tea Dances on the top floor. They have changed hands a few times before becoming hotel Wanwa. As for the other building opposite, I remember the Imperial Restaurant on the first floor. It served very good Chinese cuisine. Wonder what happended to them.

Yes Joe, the Imperial Room across from Winner Hotel was indeed a great restaurant that served classic chinese food. The gorgeous waitresses were clad in cheongsam and at one time, the captain was a woman who was a terrific drinker. For a while, I use to eat there quite frequently, but like many other restaurants in Ipoh, they fade away into oblivion in due course.

Ken, you keep on ringing bells! Now that you have mentioned it, I do remember that "lady captain". Wow, she could sink brandy like coca cola and I have witnessed it at least twice. She had a preference to Hennessey XO though. I am not sure about this but she later went over to Oversea Restaurant?

Wow, she could drink like a fish. I remember that lady captain there too. There was another guy there who was a supervisor or captain too. His name is Ah Choy. He did move over to Oversea restaurant. Very experienced guy.
